Barry, what do you think of the situation in Denmark: "Danish 17-year-old girl who used a pepper spray to fight off a rapist near migrant asylum centre is told SHE will be prosecuted for carrying the weapon"
Denyse, I think that as a pug is to the gray wolf from which dogs descended, so modern Danes are to the men who sailed the longboats. Modern Europeans seem to have given up the will to keep their civilization alive. Last month I met Paivi Rasanen at an ADF event. https://adfinternational.org/campaign/free-speech-on-trial
I have very little home for Europe's long term prospects. And that is the same direction progressives want to take us.
“I have very little home for Europe's long term prospects. And that is the same direction progressives want to take us.”
I have a thesis and so far none has explained why it is wrong. That is, the modern world was built on two things, Christianity and individual freedom. One existed without the other for centuries but very little progress took place for the average person in the Christian world. None in the rest of the world. Whatever progress took place mostly in the Christian West was amongst the elite.
Then when individual freedom evolved in England due to two versions of Protestantism emerging and fighting the English Civil War, individual freedom descended much further down the social ladder. Innovation emerged in steam, ship building and textiles and eventually the Industrial Revolution began first in England and then its colonies.
What we are seeing today is an assault on both Christianity and individual freedom. So the two pillars of the modern world are disappearing. What will replace them? My guess what always existed till the Industrial Revolution, power. That is what we are seeing today.
There is no genetic change, just a mental or psychological change. So the Danes are still the same. They just believe different things. The Vikings did not create the modern world, the English did. But the English no longer believe what is necessary to sustain a viable world. Nor does half the United States.
Yes, the left has always been about power. They don't try to hide it. The fundamental premise of their current animating theory (Critical Theory) is that all relationships amount to power dynamics.

What lessons are there here for people who want to reduce crime and violence?
