Misuse of the term "fascist" makes it harder to grasp how evil fascism is. If the term is regularly used to describe parents who don't want a pink-haired, radically pierced furry teaching "Relationships" at the public school, it is wrecked for helping us understand what real fascists actually did and would still do.

This is exactly right. When bad orange man is Hitler, what do you have in reserve when a real Hitler shows up? The conspiracy minded among us might conclude that is the point. But I continue to hope that their antics are the product of venial stupidity and not mortal mendacity. The former is usually the best explanation as there seems to be an inexhaustible supply of it. On this very trip, I was talking about Hegseth's reforms at the Air Force Academy with a retired Air Force officer. As he discussed his views, a woman who was eavesdropping on our conversation stood up and said "Heil Hitler!" and stormed off. Nothing good can come of all of that pent up rage. Is progressivism a mental illness? Sometimes I wonder.
